Maui Through A Local’s Eye: Matias Ezcurra
I actually met Matias during a wild chapter of my life. Once upon a time, I was supposed to get married here on Maui. (Plot twist: the engagement ended because we realized we were better as friends.) But that’s how I crossed paths with Matias Ezcurra — and thankfully, our connection outlasted the wedding plans.
We started working together on shoots for my skincare line, Mukama Botanica, and let me tell you: he is the ultimate hype man. He somehow made me feel at ease in front of a camera (no small feat), and we discovered we’re both unashamedly obsessed with Bad Bunny, which means our shoots are always lit. When I asked him to be Maui Makai’s in-house photographer and he said yes, I was honestly starstruck.
Because here’s the truth: Matias isn’t just good, he’s world-class. His work has appeared in Vogue, People, US Weekly, and Inside Weddings. He’s chill, enthusiastic, and has a way of capturing moments that feel both magical and effortless.
His story begins in Argentina, where his parents documented everything on camera and video. Those family albums sparked his love for storytelling and led him to study media. After a stopover in Boston (where he realized it was way too cold to surf year-round), he followed his joy to Maui in 2011. He started out shooting surf photos and selling prints out of the back of his car — humble beginnings that grew into an illustrious career.
Here’s how he puts it:
“I’ve spent the last decade obsessing over technical nuances, mastering the timing of a Pacific sunset, and exploring Maui’s most epic portrait locations to ensure you get absolutely everything you want and need out of your wedding or portrait photography experience. It’s the reason I’m trusted by Hawaii’s most celebrated luxury venues and why my couples have been featured in international publications. From intimate adventure sessions to grand oceanside celebrations, I aim to deliver galleries filled with real yet refined moments — the kind you’ll relive over and over again.”
Hundreds of weddings later, Matias is still as passionate as when he first began. From surf shots to luxury events, his work carries the same heartbeat: real, joyful, timeless storytelling.
We couldn’t be prouder to have him behind the lens for Maui Makai, giving the small businesses who work with us, the best capturing experience they could possibly have.
Here are Matias’s seven favorite things right now:
Hanging with my family
Having a good laugh
Yerba Mate
The ocean
My home gym
A long drive with good music
